Instructions Using Nero...

1. Launch Nero StartSmart, which boots up the Nero software. If you have Nero 9 suite, StartSmart is a shell program that pre-loads all of the available editing software so the wait time for the software to boot up isn't so long.
2. Click on the arrow next to the Nero icon once StartSmart loads. A pop-up menu will open featuring all of the software available in Nero 9.
3. Launch Nero Vision.
4. Select "Make DVD/DVD-Video" once Nero Vision loads.
5. Select "Import Movie File" and find a digital video file to import.
6. Break the video files into chapters, if you choose. When the file is imported, it appears in a video screen that allows you to play, pause, stop, fast-forward and reverse the video file all while viewing it. There is also a movie director's clapboard icon with a drop-down menu that helps you split the video file into chapters. Simply play the video file and view it as it plays, pausing where you want to insert chapter breaks. Add as many chapter breaks as you'd like. Remember, this step is optional.
7. Create the DVD menu. Hit the "Next" button in the lower-right hand corner of the window when you are ready. The "Next" button will take you to the edit menu where you will edit and create the DVD menu. The main frame features a preview of what the DVD menu looks like at all times. This frame allows you to drag and drop items to create the menu. To the right of this window are two tabs: template and customize. The customize tab allows you to change settings. Below the window are three files: An Intro video from Nero that plays by default when you load the finished DVD into a standard DVD player; the main menu title--which you want to edit and a chapters menu--which you will also want to edit if you created chapters.

Making the DVD Menu

8. Double-click the Menu title text box to insert the title you want for the DVD Menu. By default, it should say "Orbit."
9. Click on the gray frame of the box behind the title text box (the one you changed in Step 1). Under Customize>Properties: Picture, you have the option to turn the opacity down on this object or in the main frame you can simply right-click the object and delete it. After the object is deleted, the text will still appear--although it might appear faintly as the text is white by default and the background is a light blue. So, there are two options: Make changes to the text color, font or size (which will cover in Step 3) or make a change to the background (which will be covered in Step 4).
10. Click on the text box for the DVD Menu's title. Under Customize>Properties: Text, there are four options to change how the text appears: Appearance, Font, Text and Transformation.

The Appearance category allows you to add a drop shadow to the font as well as an "Options..." button that allows for the change in color of the drop shadow, the placement of the drop shadow and more. The purpose of a drop shadow is to put a background on text that might be hard to read against a similar background color.

The Font category allows for changes in font--whether you want a serif or san serif font--the size of the text and whether you want it to appear as regular, bold, italic, bold italic or underlined.

The Text category allows for the change in text color with an entire palette of colors to select from. This category also controls the alignment of the text, whether it is left-justified, centered or right-justified.

Finally, the Transformation category controls the size of the text box, its location, whether you want to rotate it by "X" number of degrees and the percent of opacity on the text--where 100 percent is fully visible and zero percent is invisible.
11. Select a background. To make the selection, go to Customize>Properties: Background>Background and under Background, select the drop-down menu and choose from the following four options: color, predefined background, picture file or movie file.

The movie file is the only background that activates the "Options" button below the drop-down menu. This button allows you to select where the movie file starts from in the background.

In addition to changing the background, the Properties: Background menu has other options to help customize your DVD menu and make it as close to professional quality as possible, including a background audio function that plays a clip of audio before the main title of the DVD is played and an animation function that can play animations or a movie file as background for a pre-determined amount of time before the main title of the DVD is played.
12. Use buttons to help users navigate the DVD menu when it is finished. By default, the only button on the main menu is the main title.

To put new buttons onto the DVD menu, go to Customize>Buttons and peruse the clip art Nero has provided for buttons. You have three options of buttons in the drop-down menu: thumbnails, text-only and navigational buttons.

To place a button onto the menu, simply select the button you want and click apply. To edit a text-only button, double-click the button to change the text. Note: By default, a number will show up in the text-only button(s). To delete the number go to Customize>Properties:Text Button>Appearance>Text Numbering and select text only from the drop-down menu.
13. Link buttons to perform an action. For example, create a text-button that says "Play." To link the button to play the main title on the DVD, go to "Link to:" in the "Properties: Text-Button" menu. Select the name of the main title for the "Play" button to start the regular DVD. If the main title is broken into chapters, make a "Chapters" button and link it to the Chapters menu.
14. Go to "Disc/Project" menu and make a selection that has the DVD revert back to the main menu when it has finished playing.
15. Test the project. On the "Disc/Project" is a button labeled "Check Project." Click this button and it will tell you if there are any problems with your menu(s).
16. Preview all work before burning it. Click "Next" to open a preview of the menus and see what your work looks like. If you want to change something, click "Back" and revise your work.
